Effect of Bothrops alternatus snake venom on macrophage phagocytosis and superoxide production: participation of protein kinase C J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Setubal,SS; Pontes,AS; Furtado,JL; Kayano,AM; Stábeli,RG; Zuliani,JP.
Envenomations caused by different species of Bothrops snakes result in severe local tissue damage, hemorrhage, pain, myonecrosis, and inflammation with a significant leukocyte accumulation at the bite site. However, the activation state of leukocytes is still unclear. According to clinical cases and experimental work, the local effects observed in envenenomation by Bothrops alternatus are mainly the appearance of edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis. In this study we investigated the ability of Bothrops alternatus crude venom to induce macrophage activation. At 6 to 100 ¼g/mL, BaV is not toxic to thioglycollate-elicited macrophages; at 3 and 6 ¼g/mL, it did not interfere in macrophage adhesion or detachment. Moreover, at concentrations of 1.5, 3, and 6 ¼g/mL...

In Mexico, medicinal plants are widely used. The use of Randia aculeata by healers against snakebites has never been scientifically tested in relation to possible effects on blood parameters and muscle tissue damage. Interviews were carried out in Jamapa, Veracuz, Mexico, with local residents to collect information about the traditional use of Randia aculeata. In this locality, seven pieces of fruit from the plant are mixed in a liter of alcohol, and then administered orally against snakebites. By using histological techniques and a murine model, we explored its cytoprotective properties against the effects of Crotalus simus and Bothrops asper venoms. Possible protections provided by the plant against tissue damage to skeletal and cardiac muscles and...

Genetic relationships among species of the genus Bothrops based on RAPD markers BABT
Grazziotin,Felipe; Echeverrigaray,Sergio.
The genetic relationships among 11 species of Bothrops found in Brazil were determined using random amplified fragment (RAPD) information. A total of 239 amplified bands were scored using 20 aleatory primers. Most of the bands (88.7%) were polymorphic. Phylogenetic analysis of the data determined three similarity groups within Bothrops: Group I- B. alternatus, B. neuwiedi, B. cotiara, and B. jararacusu; Group II- B. insularis, B. jararaca, and B. erythromelas; and Group III- B. moojeni, B. leucurus, and B. atrox. These groups coincided with those obtained by other methods, indicating that RAPD's could be a useful tool for the evaluation of genetic relationships at the interspecific level.

IgG antibodies against phospholipase A2 from Crotalus durissus terrificus: cross-reaction with venoms from Bothrops species from Argentina J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Rodríguez,JP; De Marzi,MC; Maruñak,S; Teibler,P; Acosta,O; Malchiodi,EL; Leiva,LC.
We examined the ability of IgG anti-crotalic PLA2 to cross-react with Bothrops spp. venoms, from snakes found in the northeast of Argentina. Immunoblotting and ELISA tests showed that IgG anti-crotalic PLA2 recognize antigens of bothropic venoms. Indirect hemolytic activity tests showed that the quantity of antibodies that neutralized 50% of Crotalus durissus terrificus venom (ED50: 2.1 mg IgG anti-crotalic PLA2/100 µg of venom) were also able to neutralize venom from other snakes in the following proportion: 34% of B. alternatus, 18% of B. diporus and 12% of B. jararacussu. Likewise, direct PLA2 activity neutralization tests showed a similar cross-neutralization pattern including 56% of B. alternatus, 29% of B. diporus and 30% of B. jararacussu. In...

INFECTIONS IN THE BITE SITE AFTER ENVENOMING BY SNAKES OF THE Bothrops GENUS J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
JORGE,M. T.; RIBEIRO,L. A..
Envenomation caused by snakes of the Bothrops genus produces a lesion in the bite site and can result in extensive necrosis. The dead tissue can be secondarily infected by bacteria that come from the snake, and the bacteria can be inoculated at the moment of the bite. The bacteria that most commonly cause infection are the enterobacteria, mainly Morganella morganii, Proteus rettgeri, Enterobacter sp., and Escherichia coli. Group D streptococci including here Enterococcus sp. and the Bacteroides sp. are also involved. Based on a study of the sensibility of these bacteria, it has been suggested that this infection must be treated with chloramphenicol, as a sole antimicrobial agent, or with the combinations of benzylpenicillin or ampicillin with...

Ocorrência de híbridos não naturais entre Bothrops jararaca e B. neuwiedi (Serpentes, Viperidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Balestrin,Rafael Lucchesi; Leitão-de-Araujo,Moema; Alves,Maria Lúcia Machado.
In May 1987, a female of Bothrops jararaca (Wied, 1824), from Carazinho, Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil, was placed in the same vivarium with a male of Bothrops neuwiedi Wagler, 1824 coming from Guaíba, RS. There, they stayed for aproximately ten months. In March 1988, it was observed a delivery of five live and two still born, among them six presented morphologic characteristics of B. neuwiedi and one of B. jararaca. After the female died, in April 1988, through necropsy, two fetusus were found, one near the cloaca and, both identified as B. neuwiedi. The morphologic analysis and the origin of the progenitors suggest the hypothesis that the litter was resulted of cross-breeding.

Postprandial thermogenesis in Bothrops moojeni (Serpentes: Viperidae) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Stuginski,DR; Fernandes,W; Tattersall,GJ; Abe,AS.
Snakes that can ingest prey that are proportionally large have high metabolic rates during digestion. This great increase in metabolic rate (specific dynamic action - SDA) may create a significant augment in the animal's body temperature. The present study investigated postprandial thermogenesis in Bothrops moojeni. Briefly, two groups of snakes were fed meals equivalent to 17 ± 3% and 32 ± 5% of their body weight and were observed for 72 hours, in which thermal images of each snake were taken with an infrared camera in a thermostable environment with a constant air temperature of 30°C. The results showed a significant increase in snake surface temperature, with a thermal peak between 33 and 36 hours after feeding. The meal size had a great impact on the...

PRODUCTION OF AN EFFECTIVE ANTI-Bothrops-TETANUS MIXED HYPERIMMUNE SERUM OF EQUINE ORIGIN J. Venom. Anim. Toxins
GUIDOLIN,R.; STEPHANO,M. A.; MORAIS,J. F.; SAKAGUTI,E. H.; PRADO,S. M. A.; FRATELLI,F.; VANCETTO,M. D. C.; HIGASHI,H. G..
The present investigation reveals the possibility of simultaneous immunization of horses with Bothrops or Crotalus snake venoms and Tetanus antigens for the production of anti-Bothrops-Tetanus or anti-Crotalus-Tetanus mixed serum, with high titers of the respective specific antibodies. Bothrops antivenoms with an average neutralizing titer of 4.16 mg venom/ml were obtained from plasma of horses with titers lower than 0.5 mg venom/ml when Tetanus antigens were not used. This suggests the existence of a synergism between Bothrops venoms and Tetanus antigens in the stimulation of the antibody response. The pooled plasma of the animals had a neutralizing titer of 21.0 mg/ml reference Bothrops venoms and 3,300 IU/ml to Tetanus antigens after purification by...

Seasonal, daily activity, and habitat use by three sympatric pit vipers (Serpentes, Viperidae) from southern Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROCHA,MARCELO C.; HARTMANN,PAULO A.; WINCK,GISELE R.; CECHIN,SONIA Z..
Viperid snakes are widely distributed in the South America and the greater distribution range of the family is found at the Crotalinae subfamily. Despite the abundance of this snakes along their geographic distribution, some ecological aspects remain unknown, principally at subtropical areas. In the present study, we evaluated the activity (daily and seasonal) and the use of the habitat by Bothrops diporus, B. jararaca andB. jararacussu, in an Atlantic Forest area at southern Brazil. We observed higher incidence of viperid snakes during the months with higher temperatures, while no snakes were found during the months with lower temperatures. The data suggest the minimum temperature as environmental variable with the greatest influence on the seasonal...

Seleção de hábitat em duas espécies de jararaca (Bothrops moojeni Hoge e B. neuwiedi Wagler) (Serpentes, Viperidae) BJB
BORGES,R. C.; ARAUJO,A. F. B..
